Do You Need a Luxury Travel Advisor? Here's How to Know!

With global travel levels at an all-time high, more people than ever are exploring the world whether for special occasions, family vacations, bucket list sabbaticals, or just for fun. And with so many options, so much noise, so many “best of” lists, and reddit threads, the truth is that travel planning can be stressful, overwhelming, and time consuming. One of the top reasons why clients come to me is because they have spent months staring at 20 open tabs and making no progress with a rapidly approaching booking deadline.

The thing is — it doesn’t have to be like this! Think of a travel advisor like a project manager. We are here to get things done. We have the firsthand travel knowledge, the insight, and the partnerships around the world to streamline the planning process and easily guide you from conceptualization to confirmation in just a few short weeks.

The best trips are tailored to you. To your interests, your preferences, your desires. Too many travelers try to replicate the vacation that their friend or neighbor or a random influencer on TikTok loved. Travel is deeply personal. Simply booking the best 5-star hotel or the most expensive private experience doesn’t mean that you will automatically enjoy your experience. My job is to assess and evaluate you as the traveler. To understand what makes you tick and your deeper motivations for the trip in order to perfectly curate it to you, as the traveler.

The travel industry is booming, and everyone wants a piece of the pie. There are a lot of frauds and false advertising on the internet… deceiving photos and pay-to-play reviews are rampant. People who have never left the country are suddenly “travel experts”. You can’t trust everything you see or read. When you book with a luxury travel advisor such as myself, I can assure you that every driver, every guide, and every hotel has been vetted from the top down and your trip is being constructed from actual firsthand travel knowledge and insight.

On this post I will answer a few common questions:

  1. What is the value of working with a travel advisor?

  2. Who is not a good fit to work with a travel advisor?

  3. What does luxury travel mean?

  4. How does planning with a travel advisor differ from planning with AI?

What is the value of working with a luxury travel advisor?

The most obvious value that I can bring to the table is my firsthand travel knowledge. I have been fortunate to travel to 56 countries (and counting) and this firsthand experience simply can’t be replicated. I understand the geography, the cultural nuances, the differences in sounds, smells, and the intangibles that make a destination unique.

I invest considerable time and money attending travel trade shows around the world, meeting with hotel owners, GMs, sales teams, tour operators, destination management companies, and more. I travel to destinations that my clients frequent, but also take time to explore new up-and-coming destinations to stay ahead of the curve.

I sleep in the hotel beds, I taste the food, and I take the tours. I make it my job to understand a destination inside out, and build invaluable partnerships and relationships along the way. These are the people that I lean on if I, myself, do not know the answer and can therefore extend this global network to you, as the client, when planning your trip.

I like to think that I can make a large world full of options digestible for my clients. I can help narrow down the correct destination, and once we have a rough itinerary in place, I can refine the details from selecting the right style of hotel, the right neighborhood, determining which tours and services will enhance your experience, and which will detract.

Who is not a good fit to work with a luxury travel advisor?

This question is tricky, as each advisor obviously has their own system and business model and each client is seeking to fulfill different needs when hiring a luxury travel professional. Some trips may be a good fit, while others aren’t.

For me personally, a client is not a good fit if:

  • They are searching for an order taker — I love working collaboratively with my clients, but I am not here to simply mark off your to-do list for you. There has to be a mutual respect between client and advisor as we work together to build your dream trip.

  • They are seeking deals and discounts — While I will happily work with your budget and apply any available promotions, I take pride in working with high quality partners who may not always be the cheapest option, but guarantee a high quality experience.

  • They cannot relinquish control — again, this is a collaborative process, but it is important to be able to trust your advisor’s insight and guidance. If something doesn’t feel right, feel free to ask us to explain the thought process behind why a specific service was included in the itinerary.

What does “luxury travel” even mean?

In today’s world of buzzwords and expert commentary, where everyone is constantly seeking the next new trend and concept, “luxury” has come to mean a lot of things. To some it is simply high thread count sheets and an expensive cocktail menu. To others, it’s the ability to be completely off the grid in a remote locale, venturing where none of their friends and family have gone before. There is also the health and wellness group, the authenticity and immersion group, the adventure seekers, the sports-focused travel, the special interest groups (hello, mahjong travel).

In truth, luxury is not a one-size-fits-all term. For some, the luxury is simply in boarding an airplane and going somewhere they’ve never been before, and that’s ok. My main objective is to get you on that flight whether your end destination is a remote Amazon jungle lodge or Plaza Athenée in Paris. The term will continue to evolve as the industry finds new ways to push the boundaries, enhance the client experience, and reach new limits.

In my mind, true luxury comes from knowing that you are embarking on a journey that has been personally tailored to your personality, your likes, your dislikes, your wishlist, and more. It is a journey that no one else gets to experience in that moment in time and that is invaluable!

How does planning with a travel advisor differ from planning with AI or Google?

It’s simple — travel advisors offer the human factor. We know the difference between “just a quick 10 minute walk” and “just a quick 10 minute walk, but it’s up 3 flights of steep stairs”. We understand that a “partial ocean view room” often means no view at all despite what the website might show. These are nuances that AI often does not catch.

I visit 50+ hotels a year and I have an entire network of experts around me with eyes and ears on the ground 24/7. We make decisions based on reality, not algorithms and anonymous reviews.

I can also provide realtime, in-destination support in the event that things go wrong. I recently had clients in France during an outbreak of wildfires. ChatGPT was still suggesting routes that involved train lines that had been cancelled. My partners and I knew that this was not a feasible possibility and were able to reroute the clients by air to their final destination.

AI is a powerful tool. It is one that I use in my day-to-day business operations! However, you simply cannot replace the power of human touch and firsthand experience.
